Over the past 37 years, J.D. Power and Associates has built a premier reputation as a marketing information firm that provides a competitive edge for the automotive industry. Twelve years ago, the firm developed the Power Information Network (PIN).

PIN’s mission is to provide clients with the information, analysis, and decision-support tools necessary to reduce risk exposure, improve marketing and remarketing effectiveness, and ultimately to improve profitability.

The unique electronic tracking system that PIN has created gathers daily point-of-sale transaction data from the retailer’s Finance and Insurance (F&I) system for both new and used light-vehicles (all makes and models). This transaction-level data is much like the information gathered from a supermarket bar code system, a technology that revolutionized the consumer packaged goods industry.

Over 250 key observations, such as price, cost, profit, finance, lease, and trade-in measures, are collected on each vehicle transaction. For additional examples of the fields available for reporting, see PIN Measures.

The raw data is aggregated, cleansed, and analyzed to add value in two fundamental ways:

  1. To ensure the integrity, accuracy, reliability, and privacy of all data.
  2. To enable a wide range of analytical applications that directly impact the decision-making capabilities of PIN clients.
Currently, PIN is providing automotive solutions and services to dealerships throughout North America, including 36 markets in the U.S. alone. As part of its strategy to expand internationally, PIN entered the Canadian marketplace in 2003. Dealers in Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver are now participating in the Power Information Network.  For a map of PIN in North America, see PIN Markets.

PIN’s industry-leading automotive solutions assist clients in improving product planning, vehicle production, distribution processes, marketing and incentives strategies, new vehicle pricing, revenue management, inventory optimization, used vehicle remarketing, and more.
